Raw pyrite, also known as Fools Gold, is an iron sulfide mineral (FeS2) valued for its metallic brass-yellow luster and cubic crystal formations. Because of its iron content, moisture is pyrite’s biggest enemy.

Why water causes Pyrite decay

When iron sulfide comes into contact with water and oxygen, a chemical oxidation reaction occurs known among mineralogists as pyrite disease.

Moisture breaks down FeS2 into iron sulfates and micro-traces of sulfuric acid. This causes the brilliant golden metallic luster to turn dull brown or greyish black. In severe moisture conditions, the crystal structure weakens and crumbles into powder.

Never wash raw pyrite clusters, pyrite turtles, or pyrite frames under tap water or submerge them in salt water.

Dry cleaning and dusting procedures

To keep your pyrite decor looking sharp:

• Dust raw clusters using a clean, soft dry paint brush or makeup brush. Soft bristles reach deep into cubic crevices without scratching crystal faces.
• Use a soft microfiber cloth for smooth polished pyrite surfaces like spheres, polished frames, or carved figures.
• Use a targeted compressed air can to blow away stubborn dust from tight cluster grooves.

Never use liquid glass cleaners, vinegar, acid solutions, or abrasive scrub pads on pyrite decor.

Monsoon storage and humidity control

In India, monsoon season (June through September) brings high atmospheric humidity that accelerates surface tarnish.

Display pyrite decor in well-ventilated, dry rooms away from bathrooms, open kitchen sinks, or humid balcony doorways.

If you store pyrite pieces in drawers or display cabinets, place 2 to 3 silica gel packets inside the container to absorb ambient air moisture.
