Pyrite, commonly known as iron disulfide (FeS2), is a metallic mineral valued for its brassy golden luster. Because Pyrite contains iron and sulfur atoms, it reacts chemically with moisture and oxygen, requiring specialized dry care routines.

Preventing moisture oxidation and pyrite decay

Exposing Pyrite to water or high humidity triggers a chemical reaction known in mineralogy as pyrite oxidation or pyrite decay.

  • Water Reaction: When Pyrite gets wet, dissolved oxygen converts iron disulfide into iron oxide (brown rust) and sulfuric acid micro-residues.
  • Surface Dullness: Water exposure turns metallic golden polishes into dark grayish-brown crusts.
  • String Degradation: Sulfuric micro-acid formation degrades internal elastic stretch cords quickly, making them brittle and prone to snapping.

Never soak Pyrite bracelets in water, wash them under tap faucets, wear them in showers, or wear them during intense gym workouts.

Daily dry cleaning routine

1. Wipe beads after daily wear with an unbleached optical microfiber cloth to remove hand sweat and skin sebum. 2. Use a dry soft-bristle brush to sweep away dust trapped in drill holes between beads. 3. If sweat touches your bracelet during warm weather, dry each bead immediately with a soft towel.

Storage with desiccant silica gel packets

Store your Pyrite bracelet in a dry, enclosed wooden box or velvet pouch away from open windows or humid bathrooms.

Add 1 to 2 fresh silica gel packets inside the storage pouch. Silica gel absorbs ambient airborne moisture during humid weather, protecting the metallic surface from tarnish and oxidation.
