Choosing between brass and copper for a home altar often comes down to one unvarnished reality: how much time you are willing to spend cleaning metal each week.

Copper oxidises quickly when exposed to air, humidity, and puja liquids like panchamrit or gangajal. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, holds its golden polish much longer under identical conditions. Both metals have deep roots in Indian temple traditions, but their maintenance demands are noticeably different.

Metal Properties and Oxidation Rates

Copper (Tambat)

• Composition: Pure elemental copper (Cu).
• Reaction to moisture: Develops a dark brown oxide layer within 3 to 7 days in humid rooms. If left wet after abhishek, it forms greenish copper carbonate (verdigris).
• Physical weight: Denser and softer than brass. Detailed carving edges round out more easily over years of vigorous scrubbing.
• Traditional role: Preferred for water vessels (Kalash, Achamani lota, Panchapatra) because of copper's natural antimicrobial properties.

Brass (Pittal)

• Composition: Alloy of approximately 60–70% copper and 30–40% zinc.

Safe Cleaning Methods: Natural vs Commercial Cleaners

Both metals require mild acidic agents to dissolve the tarnish layer. Harsh wire scrubbers or abrasive scouring pads scratch the metal and strip away delicate engraved features.

1. Tamarind Paste (Best for Pure Copper)

Tamarind contains tartaric acid, which dissolves copper oxidation without etching the metal surface.

• Soak raw tamarind pulp in warm water for 15 minutes to form a thick paste.
• Apply the paste evenly across the copper vessel or idol using your fingers.
• Let it rest for 2 to 3 minutes (do not leave it for hours).
• Rinse thoroughly under running water and immediately buff dry with a soft microfiber cloth.

2. Lemon and Fine Salt (Quick Spot Cleaner)

• Cut a fresh lemon and dip the cut face in fine table salt.
• Gently rub the salted lemon across flat brass surfaces.
• Avoid pressing salt grains heavily into deep facial carvings, as undissolved salt crystals can cause minor surface scratches.
• Rinse immediately with clean water.

3. Commercial Powders (Pitambari)

• Wet the idol lightly.
• Apply Pitambari powder with a soft cotton cloth or a soft-bristle toothbrush for hard-to-reach crevices.
• Wash off completely. Leftover dried white powder in crevices will attract moisture and cause localized discoloration.
